Review:

High Tension is a fairly simple French horror movie that manages to keep the tension high (cymbal crash) and have some panache. Marie and Alexia are college students from Paris. They are going to spend a quiet weekend visiting Alexia’s parents who live out in the country. While staying there a nameless man breaks into the home and slaughters the entire family. save Alexia. He takes Alexia away in his truck to do unspeakable things too and he remains blissfully unaware of Marie’s presence.

What follows is a cat and mouse game as Marie pursues Alexia and her attacker. The action is gory and fun, but on the whole doesn’t end up making a whole lot of sense in the end. There is also an overarching theme about homosexuality and the potential guilt associated with it. That is how I interpreted the movie anyway. Otherwise the commentary is fairly obtuse and could have worked at being a bit more clear.

Verdict:

It is an over the top gore fest and the climax is incredible. It is worth seeing despite a predictable and somewhat disappointing twist. See it.
