Review:

There is not much left to say about Saving Private Ryan. The plot is very simple. After storming the beaches of Normandy, Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) has been tasked with recovering Private Ryan. Private Ryan’s (Matt Damon) three brothers have all died in the war and General Marshall has decided that Private Ryan should not suffer the same fate. Captain Miller eventually catches up with Private Ryan after several encounters with the Germans only to discover that Ryan doesn’t want to leave. These encounters left the group rattled and testing their moral compass. They are forced to fight a pitched battle against a superior German force to try and maintain control of the river crossing.

The cast is incredibly deep. Bryan Cranston, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti, and Nathan Fillion all appear in small roles. The main platoon is even strong with Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, Giovanni Ribisi, and Tom Hanks in the star studded roles. Tom Sizemore is also excellent as Captain Miller’s second in command. Matt Damon does a solid job in the role of the titular Private Ryan. Aside from the performances, Saving Private Ryan is excellent because of its cinematography. The scenes are all beautifully shot. The carnage is extreme and the devastation in France is stark.

Verdict:

It is one of the quintessential movies about World War II. See it.
