Review:

The Ritual is an interesting take on the “lost in the woods” horror genre that the aptly named The Cabin in the Woods romped all over a few years ago.

Four college friends go on a camping trip in northern Sweden to commemorate their friend who was killed in a robbery. The trip was his idea and no one wanted to do it at the time. The movie is incredibly simple and straight forward while also maintaining a level of complexity. After realizing they made a mistake and getting at each others throats, one of the group members hurts their knee. They are two days away from the nearest lodge, so they decide to take a short cut through a forest. As they travel through the woods they come upon strange runes and landmarks that indicate habitation, but no sign of life. While on this trip they begin ruminating about flaws in their past and their darkest secrets. Everything comes out. The characters are very human and better than the typical genre fare.

The tension builds and then things really go sideways as they discover what is living in the woods. While not an incredibly original premise once fully revealed, the creature design is very interesting. Unlike many other movies I’ve watched lately it also has a sense of its running time and knows when and how to wrap everything up in a satisfactory manner though without providing too many answers.

Verdict:

The Ritual is an interesting horror concept that manages to combine seemingly disparate concepts with an interesting creature. See it.

Tomorrow’s Movie: The Prince of Egypt (1998)

Today’s Run:

Time: 13:32

Distance: 1 mile

A full minute slower than yesterday, but I really wasn’t feeling it while I was running. I also decided not to count the time I spent chasing Laika after she escaped from the backyard today which was probably about another half mile.
