Review:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in 1980 during Ego’s romantic interlude with Meredith Quill before transitioning to the present. When we next see the Guardians of the Galaxy they are preparing to defend a planet’s battery reserves from a space monster. Like the original Guardians of the Galaxy, music drives the story, and the opening sequence of Baby Groot dancing in the background of a battle with a space alien is great. After defending the planet of genetically engineered phalanx humanoids known as the Sovereign, they get their payment, Nebula. But, on the way out, Rocket can’t resist the urge to take some batteries.

It is then that we are introduced to Peter Quill’s father Ego. Kurt Russell is great in this role as both the coolest and worst father imaginable. In a move that would prove to make the movie symmetrical we also get re-introduced to Yondu in the next sequence on the planet Contraxia, which appears to be entirely composed of robot sex machines. Michael Rooker’s second turn at Yondu is better than his first and he does a great job of making the somewhat deplorable character sympathetic.

The banter and camaraderie between the cast is fantastic and adds a lot of humor. There is certainly some bits that were thrown against the wall and didn’t stick, but most of the humor lands. There is also a range of great cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 including Sylvester Stallone, David Hasselhoff, and one of the best Stan Lee cameos in any of the Marvel movies.

What makes Guardians of the Galaxy such a great series is that it is character driven, has style, and great action sequences. It has a soul, where The Avengers doesn’t. This movie is really about family, not just the family you have, but the family you choose and it does so in a really wonderful way.

Lastly, the music is great and used two of my favorite songs at its core. I’m going to go listen to Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) and If You Don’t Know Me By Now on loop while I go do my boost up to 1.8 miles today.

Verdict:

Guardians of the Galaxy continues to be Marvel’s best franchise. It is a great action movie with heart. Be sure to stick around for the four credit sequences. See it.

Tomorrow’s Movie: The Babysitter (2017)

Today’s Run:

1-mile Time: 13:39

1.8-mile Time: 27:49

Distance: 1.8 miles

Today, I walked 1.8 miles and then ran 1.8 miles in alternating laps. I definitely did better on the 1st mile and slowed down a little bit. But, this is the farthest I’ve gone so far, and I’m still coughing up all kinds of crap from being sick. So, I think the time is a decent start. It was also 50 degrees today, so that certainly helped as the road has no ice on it for the first time in weeks!
